The History of CCTV Cameras

The USA developed the first CCTV camera in the 1940’s. This innovative technology was created to monitor the testing of the V2 missile, as they planned to attack Germany with this combat-ballistic rocket. By using cameras to monitor the testing this ensured the safety of the missile engineers as they could analyse the potential problems or defects at close range without the danger of being harmed.

By the 1960’s, Britain had began installing CCTV cameras during rallies and during the appearance of a public figure such as the Prime Minister or members of the Royal Family. Due to the success of the cameras, the technology of CCTV started to develop and the Government slowly began placing them in roads, public rail stations, shops and various businesses.

In 1996, it was reported that three quarters of the UK government’s crime prevention budget had been spent on the implementation of CCTV cameras in public areas. Britain is now a surveillance society as there are reportedly over 2.5 million CCTV cameras in the UK; approximately one for every fourteen people.

Today, CCTV cameras are easy to obtain, because of this many people have decided to install these monitoring systems in and outside of their homes; with their purpose to capture burglars, cheating spouses, anti-social behaviour or to monitor their child’s nanny. They also act as a deterrent, as a burglar or gang may decide to leave a property or homeowner alone if they notice they have taken measures that could ultimately land them in court or prison.

CCTV has possibly become the most effective way to prevent crime but also to find a culprit, and has ultimately changed the very nature of British society. With the constant development in technology and the CCTV camera systems proving to be a success, it appears they will only continue to develop and make the UK a safer place to live.
