Digital Marketing and Social Media

Social media plays a huge role in the digital marketing world and in internet marketing strategy. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are great outlets for marketing messages because of their vast number of users. Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest are also growing their user numbers that increasing their value to marketers.

Marketing has changed so much over time. I remember the days when email was a “big” deal and no one understood how communication could be so easy. All you needed to do was type and click and your message was sent to whomever you wanted where ever you wanted. Emailing, along with print ads and events, used to be the simple way to market, but now with all of the social media channels things have become a bit more complex.

I tend to use Facebook and Twitter the most out of all of the social media sites. As an avid user, I am pretty used to the advertisements that are constantly being thrown at me from all directions. I feel like social media in general has actually made advertising less of an annoyance. These sites let marketers show off their products in a manner that attracts your attention in an unobtrusive manner. Marketing on social media sites also makes it possible to check out what people are selling on your own time and easily move on to their website to learn more with just a click.

Twitter, in my opinion, is probably the best outlet for marketers. When Twitter first became popular, I did not understand its purpose or what the big deal was. I stayed away from it for a while, but of course was soon converted by friends of mine and eventually became addicted. There is something about being able to connect with people online that is just so satisfying. You meet people with interests and opinions similar to your own and it makes you realize that you are not alone in this big world. You also meet individuals with opposite views as your own and you can either stay away from them or debate things with them without worrying about an in-person conflict. Twitter has a way of gathering all kinds of people together and this makes for great advertising opportunities.

Smart phones have played a major part in making these social media websites as popular as they are now. When one has the ability to connect to the internet wherever they go, it's no surprise that they will be online for long periods of time and that most of that time will be spent on social networks. These sites have become most people's main source of news and updates. So, with more people able to connect to the internet 24/7, more people will be viewing advertisements, and then there will be more of a chance of your social media marketing strategies being successful.
