Choosing the HP 1012: A Tricky Situation

Not all consumers need laser printers that offer cutting-edge features. Even those who plan to purchase a printer for their offices might find an entry-level printing solution to be the ideal choice in some cases. After all, people vary in terms of their printing needs. The HP 1012 seems to be the ideal choice for those who want to benefit from a laser-based printing solution for the first time. Likewise, individuals planning to buy a simple printer for their offices might be tempted to choose the 1012 due to its price. This review aims to discover whether HP’s low-end solution is worth one’s money.

After conducting a quick price check, it became clear that the 1012 is one of the cheapest laser printers in the market. As the 1012 is commonly sold for less than $100, HP does prove that they are capable of providing low-cost printing solutions. Upon using the printer for a short while, it also became evident that the printer does offer suitable print speeds. The 1012 is capable of reaching print speeds of up to 15 PPM, which should be enough for basic printing needs at home or at the office. It must be noted though, that the 1012 only supports monochrome prints.

Some consumers might also be pleased with the printer’s resolution. At 1200x1200 dpi, the most detailed documents should remain clear enough even at default quality settings. The 1012’s support for various paper types is also quite commendable. Likewise, the printer also boasts top-notch compatibility with several envelope sizes, ranging from the Monarch to the Com-10. Unlike many inexpensive laser printers, it is also surprising to find out that the 1012’s input tray can store more than 150 sheets of paper. This definitely minimizes the hassle involved in replenishing paper trays.

While it cannot be denied that the HP 1012 is both inexpensive and functional, it does have significant flaw. A genuine toner cartridge for the 1012 is often sold for $70 in most shops. The advertised yield for each cartridge is about 2000 pages. In this sense, the average cost per print using the 1012 is about 3 cents. A cost-effective printing solution ideally offers a print cost of about a cent per page. One should also keep in mind that advertised yield estimates only takes into account average-sized prints wherein the text does not cover the entire page.
