Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter’s here and, for me and many others, that means dry itchy skin is here too. The heat sources in our homes and the cold, blustery winter wind sucks the moisture from our skin leaving skin feeling dry and chapped. Luckily, there are some easy ways that we can keep the moisture in and keep itchy winter skin away!

Hot air from furnaces and central heat dries out the air, lowering the humidity level and robbing our skin of much needed moisture. Keeping a humidifier running, particularly in your bedroom while you sleep, adds much needed moisture back to the air and can really help your skin from drying out. Humidifiers are also great for relieving congestion, another common wintertime ailment. Just remember to keep the water fresh by changing it every day and to keep the humidifier clean to prevent mold.

Although it feels divine, a hot shower can also really do a number on dry skin in the winter, especially if you use a drying soap. Hot water softens the oils in the skin, much like the way wax softens with heat. Soap further strips away the skin’s oils leaving no moisture barrier. By using gentle, moisturizing soaps and face washes and keeping the water temperature no hotter than lukewarm, you can wash away the dirt and grime of the day without stripping the skin of its natural moisture barrier.

Even if you don’t take a steaming hot shower and you use mild soap, bathing and showering still dries the skin out. It is very important to moisturize after a shower to hydrate the skin, especially fragile facial skin, and create a barrier to keep moisture in. There are some wonderful all natural ingredients that work wonderfully to keep skin moisturized. Coconut oil is one of my favorite natural moisturizers, I always make sure to use face creams that contain coconut oil because it has several wonderful uses. It moisturizes skin and creates a lipid barrier to keep the moisture in while combating wrinkles and discoloration, making it a must for face cream. I also like to use a face cream that contains chamomile, especially in the winter when my skin is dry and irritated. Chamomile soothes and calms skin while creating a natural protective shield.

Just because the cold weather is here doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through a season of dry itchy skin. By adding a few simple things to your routine, and of course staying hydrated, you can maintain beautiful, healthy skin all year long!

Use of an all natural facial moisturizer is essential for keeping your skin healthy and moisturized during the winter months.  Janice shares this and some other ideas about winter skin care.
