Forgive me for being naive, but with their access to top fashion professionals and oversized wardrobes, I would have thought that male celebrities would generally scrub up well. Evidently it isn't fair to tar all with the same brush, as stars such as George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Shia Labeouf have completely nailed looking stylish, however, many of their counterparts are still out in the fashion wilderness.

A prime example has to be Kanye West. It's not that he doesn't attempt to be fashionable, he just takes it to beyond the extremes of good taste. Unless he is auditioning as a backing singing for Bjork, then his predilection for unusual accessories is seriously overdone. He needs to learn that one or two unusual additions, rather than a closet full, are sufficient to create a balanced outfit. Justin Bieber's similar problems with accessorising indicate that this is an area men find tricky. Bieber needs to ditch his obsession for baseball hats, as generally these don't work for anyone over the age of ten.

Another culprit for the fashion police has to be Russell Brand. Trousers that skinny really should not be seen on a man, particularly when paired with ruffled tops or vests and too much bare chest. Brand takes the 'New Romantic' look to extremes and, in contrast to the easy vest wearing style of Shia Labeouf, his tendency to expose his chest speaks only of self-vanity. Strangely, Brand's clothes are rather similar to the costumes of 'Captain Jack Sparrow,' which Johnny Depp carries off with such flair in Pirates of the Caribbean. However, Depp looks great because he is meant to look like a pirate, he's not adopting the costume as an everyday style!

Sadly, our male stars don't even have to be attempting anything radical in the style stakes to go badly wrong. It would be easier to overlook the occasional hash up if the man in question was going all out to try something new, but when even the rudiments of the male wardrobe are continually desecrated, then it is harder to forgive. Simon Cowell is a man who seriously needs to go back to basics and throw out those horrendous high-waisted trousers and stacked shoes. (He also needs to learn the benefits of a simple t-shirt, as the sweaty pullover look is not good.)

The early Blair years, prior to the arrival of the king of spin, demonstrated the former PM's personal lack of style. He was given the unfortunate nickname 'Brains,' not due to his brilliant intellect, but because his nerdy glasses and horrific ties made him look like the Thunderbirds puppet of that name. In his electoral campaign of 2009, Barack Obama made a stark contrast to his British counterpart, always immaculately turned out in his subtle, yet stylish, Hartmarx suits.
