How Pine Trees Are Processed For Furniture

Furniture manufacture is a relatively straight forward process. The process of it is not complicated but many people are curious how a trees becomes a farmhouse tables or a pine wardrobes. It is a process passed down through the ages and the skills are learned from generation to generation not just in the design of the furniture but also the manufacture of it. Other skills include the design of new tolls that make the process easier and faster such as computer driven routers and other generalized machinery.

Over the years the pine furniture industry has become greatly refined. The best pine is normally sourced from Scandinavia as the colder weather produces slower growing trees making better less brittle wood. Warmer countries produce a quicker growing tree which make the growers more money as they have a quicker turn around but the wood is of a far lower standard.

Scandinavian forests are well managed with a huge slant on ecology and conservation. After a tree is felled a truck takes it to a processing factory where the timber is cut into two or three sections. These factories use the state of the art technology and can process the wood on an immense scale. Once saws have been used the wood is placed in piles and kiln dried. This process, removes a large percentage of moisture, typically leaving the wood, with eight percent moisture content. The process can then continue.

The pine is cut further into strips about 50mm wide, planed smooth and joined together, by using strong glue and pressing to make pine furniture panels. These are all different sizes, but the most popular size being 2400mm long by 55mm wide. Sometimes a specific size may be made for a specific project, for example, a panel 1800mm long by 55mm wide might be made in bulk for wardrobe sides.

Shrink wrapping is used to wrap the panels then stacked in specific areas ready for loading, where they will then be sent out all over the world. Europe purchases the majority of the timber, but some is transported to China. Changing these boards into pine furniture is the next stage in the journey of the wood but that is a different story.
