The title of 'Biggest Fashion Show on the Plant' has four main contenders, each vying for the title. London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week (commercially known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) and Milan Fashion Week are universally accepted to be the four biggest fashion shows on the plant. Hence, when it comes to fashion shows, they are known as the 'Big Four'.


Each of these shows occurs twice a year, allowing designers to show their spring/summer collections, and then their autumn/winter collections. September or October often sees the showing of the fall collections, whereas the spring collections are usually run in February or March.


In order to co-exist most profitably, and get the most out of each fashion show, the 'Big Four' fashion shows work on a schedule. The events are often started in New York, arguably the most influential of all the 'Big Four' fashion shows, before progressing to London, then to Milan, and finally ending in Paris. Having four separate fashion shows dotted across the globe gives every designer, fashion journalist, and fashion curious individual a chance to attend or show a collection, without needing to worry about the travel and transportations being too costly or difficult.


When showing a collection of a fashion week runway, a designer knows the importance of the runway, as the publicity he will receive from his collection will help boost his sales. In order to keep efficiency and public interest at a high, the fashion weeks all house multiple runway tents, so a variety of different designers get a chance to show a collection. This allows the fashion weeks to cater to a range of smaller, independent designers, rather then just the large, international fashion houses.


Thanks to close links between the 'Big Four' and artistic foundations, a lot of small, new designers get a chance to show their collections, both everyday and avant-garde, starting their careers off with a bang. A fashion week runway is considered a powerful thing, and many designers understand how a bad showing can destroy even the best of reputations.
